Help Children Reach their Potential in School

We’re all hearing a lot of talk lately about improving public schools and what communities can do to help their schools get better. What role can parents play? And how can parents help their children reach their full potential in school, whether it’s public or not?
Education is a combined effort from Teachers, Student and the Parents. The communication between the teacher and the student ends in the classroom and that is not really enough time for the child to learn everything. He needs to study more at home, learn how to behave and more importantly how to live and that is what the responsibility of the parents is.

Parents can do the following to help their children reach their full potential in school.

1. Make sure the child is loved
All parents love their children but do they express it properly? Does the child feel loved? Does he/she feel important? Does their education matter to anyone? If the parents treat the child badly he/she will simply stop caring. When the child feels important and worthy he/she will succeed in order to keep feeling their worth. Always love your child!

2. Establish boundaries from the first day of your child’s life
Start putting boundaries and restrictions on your child from the beginning. Do not wait tell he gets older and gets out of control. You wont be able to put restrictions on him/her then! You have to do this early to set the moral standards and values you hope will guide your child as they make to aduthood. When your child enters kindergarten and hears their teacher saying the same things that you’ve been teaching them during the first years of their life, imagine the connection they make!! “My Mommy and Daddy are right!” You win credibility with them. They trust and rely that what you say is right.

3. Always stay in touch with your child and his/her teachers
You must always talk to your child about school. You can keep a talking time whenever it suits you i.e. Dinner table, before sleeping or even when doing homework. This will keep you updated with what is going on at school with your child as well as make him/her feel important and conversely help him do better. You must also attend the parent/teacher meetings and be informed what you child is doing at school from the teacher’s point of view. You must understand that when you have a direct contact with the teacher you learn more as compared to when there is the third person (the child). The child would never tell you if the teacher punished you or you failed a test. Don’t be close minded and never say “My child would never!” Let the teacher know how the child is at home to make him understand his student better.

4. Make your child responsible
DO NOT SPOON FEED YOUR CHILDREN! Let them do everything on their own. You can always supervise them but let them make their own decisions and let them learn. Students must accept the responsibilites and be held accountable for completing assignments and tasks expected of them. Never think that the school is unfair and has given too much to do. The harder the work the more tough your child becomes and you all know how hard it is nowadays in the real world.
