What is a response paper?

A response paper communicates your intellectual reactions to one or more books, ideas, or events. Much like a book review, the response paper usually provides an overall view of the book(s), idea(s), or event(s), and then responds in detail to more specific parts. For example, a response paper on the book, Actual Innocence, might give an overview of the book and its context, but then choose to focus on the writer’s concern about the problems inherent in minimizing wrongful convictions.

Prewriting a response paper:

As you read, highlight significant points in the book. At the end of each chapter, summarize in your own words the main points made and what you think about them. Take note as you read of any significant ways in which you agree or disagree with the author. Keep a running list of these. When you have finished the book, reflect on its significance. Is this an important book? Why or why not? What are its implications for the subject at hand? Who else should be reading this book? By the time you have finished the book, you should have many pages of notes from which to work.

Writing the response paper:

Once you have read the book well and taken notes, review your notes carefully. Can you identify patterns in your notes? What you are looking for is a major theme. Since you can’t possibly respond to every idea in the book, you will have to be selective here and choose the most important and most interesting ideas to which you will respond. For instance, you may notice that the author is fairly cynical about human nature. You think that human beings are far more reflective and responsible. In fact, evidence suggests that people are not so easily misled.

You might also point out ways in which the book:

· Needs challenging or qualifying

· Doesn’t address some important problem or issue

· Is impractical or otherwise irrelevant

· Overly simplifies the issues

· Misses one or more critical points

A major theme should be introduced in the first paragraph of the response paper and should help to organize and unify your paper.

Note: Do not simply respond to the first or last chapter of the book. Occasionally a student will use this as a rather transparent strategy to avoid reading the book. Avoid the appearance of negligence by paying special attention to overarching themes as well as specifics.

Parts of a response paper:

1. Introduction

Identifies major theme(s) of the book(s) and your intellectual reaction to them.

2. Body

Systematically addresses your areas of agreement and disagreement with the author(s), giving reasons, facts, and examples. Be specific and detailed. The evidence should be connected to your major theme. If you are responding to multiple books or articles, you may compare and contrast the authors based on your major theme. Be sure to cite the page when you are using specific ideas or quotes.

Note that your personal beliefs, if they are to be considered valid, must be supported by facts and logic. You may not simply say “The death penalty is wrong.” You must provide facts and logic that lead the reader to the inescapable conclusion that the death penalty is wrong. If you cannot back up a statement with facts and logic, leave the statement out of the paper.

3. Conclusion

Summarizes your reaction and sets out your ideas about the significance of the book, its implications, and perhaps who else should be reading it.

Writing standards for response papers:

Response papers should be written using the standards for any academic paper:

· Spelling and grammar should be perfect. You can insure this by using a standard word processing program’s spell check and grammar check programs. Not only do these programs allow you to hand in a paper free from spelling and grammatical mistakes (always impressive to a professor), but they actually improve your grammar and spelling as well.

· A standard citation method must be used whenever you refer to another person’s ideas or include quotations. Use the APA style manual assigned to format your paper and to cite all ideas that are not your own.

· The paper should be typed, double-spaced, with standard one-inch margins and type size.

Writing has proven to be a task many have continuously avoided. Now at a time when writing articles could help your job or work, facing it at hand can be still faced with unfriendly behavior. While there are a great number of people who do not have the same attitude in article writing as others, there are still those who would rather walk in piping hot coals than do some article writing. What set other people apart from other towards article writing is that they are prepared and has some methods and procedures in writing articles.

1. Create an outline

One of the methods you can use to prepare yourself when tasked to write in article is creating an outline first. Creating an outline for all your articles makes you prepared. You have an idea of what to do first and make a plan for your succeeding steps. Being prepared makes the job easier and faster. Being organized will allow for disorientation to be shunned away.

2. Write down the Ideas

An outline can act as the design or blueprint for your article. This will guide you in creating the introduction, body and conclusion of your article. Here in this point, you can write down some of the ideas and sentences that you feel will look good in your article. This could be some of the focal point that could help make your article creative, interesting and appealing to a reader.

3. Pre-planned projects

A carefully planned and fully prepared project would guarantee and ensure a problem and worry free procedure that can virtually go without any hassles. Creating an outline for all your articles will get you ready and breeze through writing an article in no time at all. Here I will provide you with some tips and guidelines in how to create an outline for all of your articles.

4. Make it Interesting

Do a couple of brainstorming and jot down your brilliant ideas first. Think of some ways to attract the interest of your reader. Designate a time frame where you can write down all the ideas that you can use for your articles. By this time you should have done all your research and information searching. Review and reread your ideas and notes, gain mastery and sufficient familiarity with your topic so that writing them down later own would be easy for you.

5. Create sub titles

The next step is to discover your sub topic and sub titles. As you would provide a first sentence for your article, one that would immediately grab the attention of your reader, you would need some as well for your sub topics. To be concise, you would need to get all the facts that will support and go against your point.

6. Connecting paragraphs

These are the frames or skeleton of your article, now its time to add the flesh and the meat of your article. You will need to connect all your paragraphs and sub topics. This will form the body of your Article. While the introduction will usher in the ideas of your paragraph, you will need a conclusion. The conclusion will wrap up your points and drive in what you are saying in your article.

7. Write a draft

The outline for your article would also require you to write a draft first. This may take more than one attempt but remember that it is called a draft for a reason. Your outline shall be perfected as each draft is written and this draft is meant for your eyes only so there’s no reason to feel ashamed. As you go on, you will clearly see the bigger picture and write an article that will perfectly suit what is demanded of it.

8. Look for mistakes

Reread and reread what you have written down. Always refer to your outline so that you won’t drift away from what you had first written down. It’s not hard to be caught in the moment and get lost in your writing frenzy. Your outline will help you keep in track. All those hours spent in outlining your article will not go to waste. This will serve as your guide in writing articles. Trust and rely on your outline because this will prove to be a very helpful tool in writing all of your articles

1. Go for the first letter of a word up and then down. If I can get one of the two words, then having the first letter of the other sometimes jogs my memory.
2. Paying attention to the theme of the crossword, if any, is helpful.
3. Go for the easier ones first, then more difficult.
4. Its not cheating to use Reference in fact it’s the best way to help you! Computer, crossword dictionary, thesaurus and atlas are the most handy.
5. Having someone help you. Sometimes the easiest words don’t come to mind so ask for someone’s help if you’re really stuck.
6. Going away and coming back to it later can sometimes clear the mind and help one focus better. It also helps you think of new words which you weren’t think before.
7. Enjoy what you are doing. It will help you focus better and make everything alot easier.
8. Place a checkmark next to the number of the hints you’ve gotten. It can help you focus more on the ones you haven’t gotten yet.
9. If it’s in a book or newspaper, sometimes the answers can be found in the publication that the crossword is in.
10. Sometimes the answers just come out of no where - be patient.
11. Try working on a particular section of the puzzle (upper left, right or lower left or right).
12. Think about the hint or hints with a different perspective

The “freshman fifteen” is a term used in the United States and Canada to describe the weight gained by students during their freshman (first) year of study in college or university. The term refers to the often-reported, yet unsubstantiated claim that freshman typically gain fifteen pounds during their first year. The purported causes of this weight gain are increased alcohol intake and the consumption of fat and carbohydrate-rich cafeteria-style food and fast food in university dormitories.

Most people are conscious about gaining weight so you can do the following to avoid this:

1. Don’t be afraid of gaining weight. Your fear will make it worse for you.
2. Work out and watch what you eat. Do not eat too much fast food!
3. Eat with other people. You’ll be more careful about what you eat when you are eating with someone else.
4. Don’t eat quickly and stay away from late-night snacks
5. Don’t have many munchies in your room other than fruit and veggies
6. Don’t forbid yourself things you love. Just ask yourself, “do I really need a whole piece of cake?” or “do I need this EVERY night?” You can’t totally stop eating them just decrease the quantity.
7. Exercise! Walk with other people, go to the gym, go to the pool. Do not take the bus or the subway to the college wake up early and WALK!
8. Don’t wait until you’re starving to eat. You’re going to eat quickly and eat more and this is going to make you gain more weight.
9. Drink in reasonable amounts for 2 reason. First: Alcohol makes you gain weight. Second: The ladies don’t like a guy who is piss drunk and obnoxious and neither do the guys like drunk chicks.
10. Rule: if it doesn’t taste good after two bites, it’s not going to be worth finishing

We’re all hearing a lot of talk lately about improving public schools and what communities can do to help their schools get better. What role can parents play? And how can parents help their children reach their full potential in school, whether it’s public or not?
Education is a combined effort from Teachers, Student and the Parents. The communication between the teacher and the student ends in the classroom and that is not really enough time for the child to learn everything. He needs to study more at home, learn how to behave and more importantly how to live and that is what the responsibility of the parents is.

Parents can do the following to help their children reach their full potential in school.

1. Make sure the child is loved
All parents love their children but do they express it properly? Does the child feel loved? Does he/she feel important? Does their education matter to anyone? If the parents treat the child badly he/she will simply stop caring. When the child feels important and worthy he/she will succeed in order to keep feeling their worth. Always love your child!

2. Establish boundaries from the first day of your child’s life
Start putting boundaries and restrictions on your child from the beginning. Do not wait tell he gets older and gets out of control. You wont be able to put restrictions on him/her then! You have to do this early to set the moral standards and values you hope will guide your child as they make to aduthood. When your child enters kindergarten and hears their teacher saying the same things that you’ve been teaching them during the first years of their life, imagine the connection they make!! “My Mommy and Daddy are right!” You win credibility with them. They trust and rely that what you say is right.

3. Always stay in touch with your child and his/her teachers
You must always talk to your child about school. You can keep a talking time whenever it suits you i.e. Dinner table, before sleeping or even when doing homework. This will keep you updated with what is going on at school with your child as well as make him/her feel important and conversely help him do better. You must also attend the parent/teacher meetings and be informed what you child is doing at school from the teacher’s point of view. You must understand that when you have a direct contact with the teacher you learn more as compared to when there is the third person (the child). The child would never tell you if the teacher punished you or you failed a test. Don’t be close minded and never say “My child would never!” Let the teacher know how the child is at home to make him understand his student better.

4. Make your child responsible
DO NOT SPOON FEED YOUR CHILDREN! Let them do everything on their own. You can always supervise them but let them make their own decisions and let them learn. Students must accept the responsibilites and be held accountable for completing assignments and tasks expected of them. Never think that the school is unfair and has given too much to do.

Many people are now into homeschooling these days for whatever reason. It is important to design a classroom environment so the kids can feel as though they are at a school. Here are a few tips to create that perfect study environment:

1. Dedicated Space.
Keep distractions away from the study area. No TV, no XBox, PS3, or any other gaming device. This is a time to learn and study. Keep it clean so the children will be ready to begin as they enter their home classroom.

2. Equipment Purchases
Large white board. The teaching parent will use this frequently to show examples of discussed topics.
One small student desk per child, or use a table for multiple students
Computer, an absolute must. A PC or Mac is needed to keep your child(ren) abreast of the latest technologies. Many educational programs are available online. Have your child(ren) involved in the selection of furniture and or equipment. They will take pride in their decisions and respect the condition of the particular items.

3. Organization
The parent and child(ren) need to stay organized. Keep record of books distributed, homework assignments, completed work, progress, and grades.

4. Motivation
Encourage your child(ren) with their studies and reward them for great accomplishments.

5. Syllibus
Go beyond what is required by your local government or Borard of Education. Take trips to your local library and let the child(ren) select or suggest a few categories from which they have to choose.

6. Field Trips

These are always fun adventures for the child(ren). Depending on your location, select venues where you can apply their studies with the community or regional activities.

Everyone has to go through this stage at least once in their lives. It’s never easy to talk in front of the whole class so don’t be so hard on yourself.

The best thing you can start off by doing is *really* knowing your topic. Research on it as much as possible using a computer, books or whatever you can think of. The better prepared you are, the less chance you have to make mistakes. So, preapare yourself and practice talking aloud to friends, family, or a mirror. Start with the mirror though you’ll feel more comfortable and take one step at a time.

Keep it simple. Going in too much detail is not something I would recommend as there are more chances that you would forget stuff. Try to make an outline for your speech and write the KEYWORDS on the a paper or a card maybe. The keyword is a prompt to let you know in what order you will be talking about the subject. Even if you do forget something just take a quick peek at the cards and you’ll be on the right track again.I would suggest that you number your cards in case you drop them.

Make sure you allot a certain time for each notecard and more importantly you STICK TO IT! You don’t want to talk on a particular thing for too long. Time yourself and practice with them till you are perfect. It’s a good idea to keep a wrist watch with you to keep you updated with the time.

When you step in front of the class you must tell yourself that you are the most qualified person in the room to talk about the subject. This will help you increase confidence. You must keep up your confidence. If you tell yourself you’re nervous and you wont be able to do it you’ll make many mistakes but if you tell yourself its easy, everyone’s done it or you can do it you’ll be perfect The main thing is that you stay calm cause it’ll help you make less mistakes.

When making the speech you will find it pretty hard to look in the eye’s of the audience and you can not make a speech looking down or at the paper you have to look at the people. What you can do here is find a friend or someone you feel confident to speaking. She/He will always be smiling and supportive which will boost your confidence.
